Seven recent graduates recently received scholarship awards celebrating students in the arts from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Abigail Gardner of Portville, Evan Snyder of Olean and Quincy Stebbins of Allegany-Limestone received the Carroll Swanson Memorial Scholarship for the Performing Arts for $200.
The Carroll Swanson Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Performing Arts, established at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation through a bequest from Ms. Swanson’s estate, continues Swanson’s love for supporting music students by providing scholarships for students at Allegany-Limestone, Olean and Portville who have participated in a music program.
Gardner will attend Nazareth University to study music education. Snyder will attend St. Bonaventure University to study cybersecurity. Stebbins will attend SUNY Geneseo to study early childhood education.
Ava Andrews of Portville, Benjamin Edwards of Ellicottville and Kathryn Hatch of Franklinville received the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship for the Arts at various amounts.
This scholarship was established in 2016 by the friends and family of Elisa B. Hughey, a deep lover of the arts and education, after she lost a long battle with cancer. In 2019, the Hughey Scholarship Committee moved the fund under the management of CRCF. This fund provides annual scholarships for college-bound students committed to advancing their skills in any aspect of the fine arts (including sculpture, painting, drawing, watercolor, graphics, animation, architecture/design and photography).
Andrews will study fashion design at Fashion Institute of Technology. Edwards will attend Rochester Institute of Technology to study 3D digital design. Hatch is a current Houghton College student studying music.
Ella Marble of Pioneer Central School received the Alyn J. Heim Music Scholarship for $2,300.
The Heim scholarship is for a graduating Cattaraugus County student majoring in music. The recipient must demonstrate academic success, as well. Paul DeRitter, Mr. Heim’s former student at Manchester Regional High School in Haledon, NJ, and a musician and music educator himself, established the scholarship to honor his former teacher. Mr. DeRitter taught elementary general music and instrumental music for 33 years in Franklinville.
Marble will attend SUNY Fredonia to study music education.
