OLEAN, N.Y., March 2, 2016 – Eleven local and national charitable organizations recently received $16,000 in grants from two funds established by the late Doris Reisner of Olean at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
The CRCF board of directors approved the annual grants from the Lewis and Doris Reisner and Doris Reisner funds based on the criteria set up by Mrs. Reisner.
“Mrs. Reisner established these endowed funds to ensure the organizations she supported during her lifetime would receive support on a permanent basis in the future,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit, CRCF executive director.
Mrs. Reisner created the Lewis and Doris Reisner Fund specifically for the benefit of Olean General Hospital to honor her husband, Dr. Lewis C. Reisner, who was an OB/GYN at the hospital, Ms. Buchheit noted. The hospital played an important role in the professional and personal lives of Mrs. Reisner and her husband and both were dedicated to the quality, reputation and growth of the hospital.
This year Olean General Hospital Foundation received a grant of $8,845. The hospital has several projects in mind and will be finalizing a choice on where the funding can help most, according to Karen Fohl, Olean General Hospital Foundation president.
“We will work closely with the Reisner family representatives to determine the best use for these funds,” Ms. Fohl said.
The last project made possible through this fund, with grants accumulated over a three-year period, was the Distance Paramedic Program/Learning Center located at the hospital. “The center allows paramedics in several counties to be trained by some of the best and brightest instructors without the requirement of long distance travel,” Ms. Fohl said.
In addition to Olean General Hospital, 10 organizations benefit annually from the other fund Mrs. Reisner established – the Doris Reisner Fund.
The CRCF board approved grants totaling $7,360 from the Doris Reisner Fund this year. Those annual beneficiaries are:
- American Cancer Society, WNY Chapter
- American Diabetes Association, WNY Chapter
- American Friends Service Committee
- Empire State Association for the Deaf
- Genesis House
- HomeCare & Hospice
- Interfaith Caregivers
- The ReHabilitation Center
- SPCA in Cattaraugus County
- St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church
Since both funds were established in 2000, the combined amount of grants awarded from the funds totals more than $200,000.
Dr. and Mrs. Reisner moved to Olean in 1954 from the Philadelphia, Pa., area with their five children, Walter, Richard, Janet (Wilson), Juliann (Carter) and Elizabeth (Murray).
Dr. Reisner, who passed away February 9, 1993, also was a partner at the Olean Medical Group.
Established in 1994, the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation is growing good by connecting donors to the causes they care about most in the region. Grants from the foundation support many areas, including education, scholarships, health care, the arts, community development, human service, and youth development.
