Area graduates receive scholarships to pursue business degrees

Seven area graduates recently received scholarships managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation for students pursuing business degrees.

Carolyn Wright of Franklinville Central School/Ten Broeck Academy, Evelyn Phillippi of Pioneer Central School and Olean High School’s Victoria Certo and Cory Walker received the Daniel McCarthy Scholarship.

The scholarship, given through the generosity of the Catherine M. Cridler Trust, honors Mr. McCarthy, one of Olean Business Institute’s founders. The scholarship is available to graduating students pursuing a business degree.

Wright will attend Alfred State College to study agricultural business. Phillippi will attend Alfred University to study accounting.

Certo will study accounting at Penn State University. Walker plans to attend John Carroll University to pursue a degree in business logistics/economics.

Wright and classmate Maria Frascella also received the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Board of Realtors Scholarship as did Westfield Academy Central School’s Sydnee Abele and Katherine Braund of Maple Grove High School.

The board of realtors partnered with CRCF this year to provide two $500 scholarships each to students in good academic standing in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties. Preference is given to students pursuing a business-related degree.

Frascella will study cybersecurity at Alfred State SUNY College of Technology. Abele will attend Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, to study business and sports management. Braund will study business and Spanish at Jamestown Community College.
