Area students receive Community Foundation health care scholarships

Four area students will receive $3,000 in awards from health care-related scholarship funds at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

“These four health care-related scholarships embody the passion our donors have for assisting up-and-coming young professionals,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit, Community Foundation executive director.

“These donors, through the scholarship funds they established, continue to make an important difference in the lives of our area students,” she added.

Scholarship recipients include:

Mohammad & Sakeena Iqbal Health Care Award:

Kaylee McRae

  • Kaylee McRae of Allegany-Limestone High School, pursuing a Physician Assistant degree at Gannon University.

Established by Drs. Ahmad and Naheed Hilal in memory of Dr. Naheed Hilal’s parents, this $500 scholarship is for a senior from Allegany-Limestone High School, ranked in the top 25 percent of the class, entering a discipline related to the medical field.

Kothari Family Fund Health Care Scholarship:

  • Marielle Giardini of Allegany-Limestone High School, pursuing Physical Therapy at Bowling Green State University.

Established by Drs. Ashok and Yogini Kothari, this $500 scholarship is awarded to an Allegany-Limestone senior pursuing a health care-related degree, financial need and SAT scores.

Pat McGee Nursing Scholarship:

  • Michelle Halliday of Allegany, pursuing Nursing at Jamestown Community College-Olean; and
  • Brandi Sprout of Portville, pursuing Nursing at Jamestown Community College- Olean.

Established through the Pat McGee Endowment, this fund is named in memory of the former New York State Senator representing the 57th district. Two awards are given each year to students, traditional or non-traditional, in the 57th State Senate district, pursuing nursing degrees.

Ms. Halliday and Ms. Sprout will each receive $1,000.
