The Santa Sheriff Fund and Rose Pappas Foundation Fund each made grants to support area families and nonprofits during the holidays.
The Santa Sheriff Fund allows volunteers in the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Department to purchase and distribute toys to disadvantaged families across the county. Two Cattaraugus County employees established the program in 2004 in response to the growing need of area families during the holiday season.
This year, the program is putting presents under the tree for 35 area families, said Kim Harrison, a founding member and volunteer with the Santa Sheriff program.
Since its establishment in 2012, the fund has made nearly $49,000 in grants to help purchase toys for area families.
The Rose Pappas Foundation Fund recently made $2,650 in grants to agencies that support the needy around the holidays and year-round.
Betty Pappas established the fund at CRCF in 2002 after the passing of her sister, Rose, to preserve her memory by providing support to individuals facing difficult times and organizations whose services aid the needy.
The following organizations received $200 grants:
- St. Mary of the Angels Basilica (for 2017 community Christmas dinner)
- First Baptist Church of Olean (for 2018 community Easter dinner)
- HomeCare & Hospice
- Hinsdale Food Pantry
- Portville Food Pantry
- Olean Food Pantry
- Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry
- Olean General Hospital Foundation, Compassionate Companion Program
- Olean Senior Center
- Interfaith Caregivers
- Hart Comfort House
- Michael’s Home
The Olean General Hospital Foundation also received $150 for general support. The ReHabilitation Foundation received $100.
“The holiday season is a time to be mindful of those in need, and donors to the Foundation each year prove willing to meet the community’s needs,” said CRCF Executive Director Karen Niemic Buchheit. “The Santa Sheriff Committee and Betty Pappas are just two examples of the many generous donors at the Foundation and the community as a whole.”
