Sixteen organizations, including four area food pantries, received grants recently from the Rose Pappas Foundation Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Each year the Rose Pappas Foundation Fund distributes a number of grants in December as part of the holiday season and in memory of Rose Pappas. Her sister, Betty Pappas, established the fund at the Foundation in November 2002 in Rose’s memory in order to bring happiness into the lives of others, particularly the elderly and handicapped.
Food pantries receiving grants included the Hinsdale, Portville, Olean, and Loaves and Fishes food pantries. They were able to provide special holiday food packages, in part due to the Pappas grants.
The fund also supported community holiday dinners including the Christmas dinner organized by St. Mary of the Angels Church and the Thanksgiving dinner organized by St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. A grant also has been provided to the First Baptist Church, which organizes the community Easter dinner.
According to Karen Niemic Buchheit, CRCF executive director, holiday grants from the Rose Pappas Foundation Fund totaled more than $3,000.
Other organizations that received grants from the fund included the Olean Senior Center, HomeCare & Hospice, Interfaith Caregivers, Olean General Hospital’s “Compassionate Companion” program, Olean General Hospital Foundation, the Rehabilitation Foundation, St. Michaels’s Home, Comfort House of Allegany County, Rebuilding Together Olean, and American Red Cross.
Ms. Buchheit noted that more than $73,000 has been awarded to charitable organizations and to assist disadvantaged elderly or handicapped individuals since the fund’s inception.
Ms. Pappas said the generosity of many donors helps carry on this tradition.
“I truly appreciate all the gifts to Rosie’s fund that make it possible to give back to the community and help us help many needy individuals, especially during the holiday season,” Ms. Pappas said.
