Scholarship Funds

Laurie Anzivine Memorial Scholarship Fund
This $250 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior from any high school in Cattaraugus County, first preference, or any high school within a 30-mile radius of Olean, NY, who will be attending a four-year college and who has had an immediate family member or guardian who has gone through cancer treatment. The student must be in good academic standing. Financial need is not a factor. The applicant must submit an essay of no more than 350 words explaining what the student learned from his/her family member or guardian who struggled with cancer and the impact it left on him/her and what advice the student would give to someone else who may face the same situation.

Elodine Swarts Baxter and Lena Conrad Swarts Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship (amount varies) is for a promising and deserving graduating senior from Hinsdale Central School or a resident of Ischua, NY, regardless of what high school the student attends. The student must demonstrate academic success, involvement in extracurricular activities and financial need. Established by Norman Baxter in memory of his mother, Elodine Swarts Baxter, and grandmother, Lena Conrad Swarts.

Albert Bennett scholarshipAlbert A. Bennett Jr. Family Scholarship Fund
This award (amount varies) is for a graduating Otto-Eldred (PA) High School senior pursuing a post-secondary degree at a 2- or 4-year college. Students should demonstrate academic excellence, participation in extracurricular activities and strong educational/career goals. Established by Sue Bennett in memory of her husband.

Tyler BihlerTyler Bihler Memorial Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship for two students each year, one male and one female, graduating from Olean High School with GPAs of 80 or above. Preference for students accepted to a four- or two-year college who demonstrate qualities of good citizenship and character. Established by Tyler Bihler’s family. The first scholarship was awarded  when Tyler’s class graduated in 2014.

Burt Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship awarded to one student each from Olean High, Allegany-Limestone Central, Hinsdale Central and Portville Central schools and based solely on a student’s financial need. Established by the Burt Committee of the First Presbyterian Church of Olean in memory of Dr. Rudy Burt.

May C. Carroll Scholarship
This award (amount varies) is for a graduating senior who is a resident of the Village of Cattaraugus. Must demonstrate academic promise, participation in extracurricular activities and community service. Financial need is not a factor. Established through the May C. Carroll Trust.

Chautauqua Cattaraugus Board of Realtors Scholarship Fund
Two $500 scholarships each for students from Cattaraugus County and two $500 scholarships each for students from Chautauqua County planning to attend either a 2- or 4- year college, with preference for students who will be majoring in the business field. The student must also be in good academic standing. Financial need is not considered. Established by the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Board of Realtors.

Thomas W. Conklin Sr. Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is an annual award in the amount of $1,000 given to a graduating senior from Allegany-Limestone or Olean High School who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. The student must have maintained an overall grade point average of 85 or above during his or her high school career and exhibited high academic effort. The student must exhibit certain intangible qualities including: kindness to others, leadership, positive attitude, and sense of humor. The student must demonstrate past involvement in the community.

Jack & Muriel Fogarty Memorial Scholarship
A $500 award for a senior graduating from Olean High School with a GPA of 80 or above, accepted to a four-year college. Must demonstrate financial need and ability to balance academic standing with extracurricular activities and work. Must maintain 2.5 GPA to renew. Established as part of the Olean City School District Scholarship Fund and the DJH Foundation.

Fred G. Grace Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for a senior from Allegany-Limestone High School who attended Allegany-Limestone for four years and will be majoring in business, teacher education or a sports-related field. Must be a varsity letter winner. Award amount varies.

Russell F. Greenawalt & Elizabeth Page Greenawalt Scholarship
This award covers the total of Cornell University tuition, room and board less any other scholarships received. Available to an Olean High School senior who demonstrates the strongest academic record of those accepted to Cornell. Renewable up to four years. Must maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to renew. Established as part of the Olean City School District Scholarship Fund through the estate of Russell F. Greenawalt. This award is named in honor of Mr. Greenawalt, a Cornell alumnus, and his wife, Elizabeth Page Greenawalt, who both attended Olean City Schools. His father, William C. Greenawalt was superintendent of Olean City School District for 20 years.

Hamburg Track Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is for Hamburg High School track athletes who exhibit strong academic performance, athletic performance and character.

Paul and Betty Hanson Career/Technical Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded annually to one or two students graduating from Olean High School who are pursuing post-secondary career or technical education at a trade or technical school. Academic merit and financial need will be considered. Trade or technical programs could include, but are not limited to, drafting, welding, air conditioning and heating technology, autobody repair, automotive technology, CAD, building/trade construction, heavy equipment technology, masonry, manufacturing technology, office technology, medical office technology, culinary arts and cosmetology.

Alyn HeimAlyn J. Heim Music Scholarship
The purpose of the fund is to provide financial assistance to a deserving high school senior prospective music (vocal or instrumental or music education) major. Must be a graduating senior from a Cattaraugus County high school; preference for a student recommended through the Cattaraugus County Music Teachers Association program. Must have been accepted at a post-secondary institution (4-year college, 2-year college). Demonstrate academic success by have a grade point average of 3.0/90/B and/or must be in top 5 percent of high school class. Established by Paul DeRitter.

Ann Heister PhotoPatricia “Ann” Heister English/Journalism Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior from Ten Broeck Academy/Franklinville Central School who will be entering a four-year college or university. The first preference will be for a student intending to major in English, journalism or a related field and who submits a letter of recommendation from his/her high school English teacher. The second preference will be for a student with any major who submits a letter of recommendation from his/her high school English teacher. The student should demonstrate good academic standing. Financial need will be considered.

Joseph and Cecily Higgins Scholarship Fund
This fund will support a scholarship for students who are graduating from Allegany-Limestone Central School or Archbishop Walsh and who intend to pursue a degree in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math)-related majors Financial need may be considered. This scholarship shall be renewable for up to 4 years total. The student must submit an academic transcript at the end of the year and demonstrate at least a 2.5 GPA to reapply. The amount of the scholarship will be $2,500 per year, for up $10,000 total for 4 years. Established by Joseph and Cecily Higgins.

Hinsdale bobcatHinsdale Alumni Association Memorial Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship for a graduating senior at Hinsdale Central School. Applicants should have an average of 80 percent or higher, demonstrate qualities of good citizenship and good character, and have definite educational goals. Established by the Hinsdale Alumni Association.

Kristen Hintz Memorial Scholarship Award
This scholarship is named in memory of Kristen Nicole Hintz, who was a senior at Ellicottville Central School and at the top of her class when a tragic auto accident cut her life short in 2000. She was a leader at the top of her class. She was a multi-sport athlete who always gave her best and persevered through difficult situations. Her kindness touched al she met. She had a way of making everyone feel welcomed. Kristen also was active in her church and volunteered in her community.

This fund will provide one $1,000 scholarship or two $500 scholarships for a student(s) graduating from Ellicottville Central School depending on funds available and number/quality applicants.

Students applying for this scholarship must include an essay that describes and explains what characteristics and qualities he/she possesses that makes him/her deserving of this scholarship, including information that reflects the how he/she demonstrate kindness and perseverance, qualities for which Kristen was known. The essay should also describe any situation where he/she has overcome an obstacle or met a challenge in life and information about a time when he/she made an impact on someone’s life.

Anthony IacovinoAnthony Iacovino American History Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Anthony “Tony” Iacovino, a former long-time Olean High School educator and coach, by his sons. A passionate teacher and coach, for more than 30 years Tony inspired young people with lessons in American history in the classroom and led his teams to many victories on the basketball court and the baseball diamond.

This fund will make possible a $1,000 annual scholarship for a student at Olean High School, with a preference for a student who excels in the classroom and also is active in extracurricular activities and community service.

Mohammad and Sakeena IqbalMohammad & Sakeena Iqbal Health Care/Education Award
A $1,000 scholarship, or two scholarships of $500, for seniors graduating from Allegany-Limestone High School, ranked in the top 25 percent of the class, and intending to pursue a bachelor’s degree in the health care field or education. Funded by Drs. Ahmad and Naheed Hilal Family Fund in memory of Dr. Naheed Hilal’s parents.

Paul and Mary Janowicz Memorial ScholarshipPaul and Mary Janowicz
A $500 award will be for a graduating senior from Ellicottville Central School who plans to attend a 2- or 4-year college and who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need. Established by their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Paul Hanson of Olean.

Signe, Svenborg, Agnes and Selma Johnson Scholarship
A $1,000 award for an Olean High School senior who demonstrates financial need. Preference for a student pursuing a degree in teaching or who has strong educational/career goals. Established through the living trust of Signe H. Johnson, a former Portville and Olean high school teacher. Her sisters, Svenborg, Agnes and Selma, also taught at Olean High School.

Signe H. JohnsonSigne H. Johnson Scholarship
A $1,000 award for a Portville Central School senior who demonstrates financial need. Preference for a student pursuing a degree in teaching or who has strong educational/career goals. Established through the living trust of Signe H. Johnson, a former Portville and Olean high school teacher.

Kothari Family Fund Health Care Scholarship
Two $500 scholarships for students pursuing a health-care related degree, one available to Allegany-Limestone High School students and one for students attending high school in Cattaraugus County or McKean County (PA) . Established by Drs. Ashok and Yogini Kothari as part of the Kothari Family Endowed Fund.

Wayne KriegerWayne Krieger Memorial Scholarship
A $750 scholarship to benefit Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES criminal justice students pursuing degrees for law enforcement. Three awards are given each year,  one each for students at the Olean, Ellicottville and Belmont BOCES sites. Established in memory of sheriff’s deputy Wayne Krieger by his family. Applications are available through BOCES.

Louis “Louie” Magnano Scholarship
This scholarship is named in memory of Louis A. “Louie” Magnano, an Olean businessman and philanthropist who dedicated his life to building a better Olean. His business enterprises included Blue Bird Coach Lines and Park Centre Development. His community support is legendary and includes landmark contributions to Olean General Hospital, Olean Skateboard Park, the William O. Smith Recreation Center, St. Bonaventure University, Jamestown Community College, the Rehabilitation Center, and more. This scholarship is dedicated to his memory and legacy. Criteria and first award date TBA.

Maryetta’s Mission Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is to be awarded to students who are entering or currently in a post-secondary program for Christian-based ministerial studies – this would include majors or fields of study such as including theology, music liturgy, youth development, Christian administration, etc.
Must be a resident of Western Pennsylvania or Western New York.
Student must submit transcript from their first semester or fall semester of study and must have at least a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship will then be awarded for the second semester.
The amount of the award will vary. Established by Maryetta’s Mission c/o of the First Church of Good of Eldred, PA.

Daniel McCarthy Scholarship
Available to students pursuing undergraduate business studies. Award amount varies and awardees may reapply. Given through the generosity of the Catherine M. Cridler Trust and named in honor of Daniel McCarthy, one of the founders of Olean Business Institute.

Bob and Barbara McCord Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded to graduates of Otto-Eldred (PA) High School, with a preference for students attending post-secondary institutions (can be 1-, 2- or 4-year institutions) in the career/technical fields. Students should be in good academic standing, be involved in extracurricular activities (sports, music, etc. and demonstrate financial need. The award amount will vary. Students receiving an award can re-apply. The scholarship is named in honor of Bob and Barbara McCord, both graduates of Otto (PA) High School. Bob served at 27 years in the U.S. air force and Barbara worked as a secretary at many of the bases Bob was stationed. Established through the Bob and Barbara McCord Private Foundation, the scholarship carries on the McCord foundation’s goal of helping others achieve their educational goals.

Senator Pat McGeePat McGee Nursing Scholarship
Two awards (amount varies) are given each year to students, traditional or nontraditional, in the 57th State Senate district (which includes much of Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties) who are pursuing nursing degrees. Students must maintain at least a C average. Students previously receiving the award also can reapply. Established through the Pat McGee Endowment, this fund is named in memory of the former late New York State Senator representing the 57th district.

John and Louise MurphyJohn J. Murphy Family Scholarship
A $10,000 scholarship awarded over four years at $2,500 per year. Preference will be given for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, engineering or business.  Selection criteria shall include scholastic achievement, school and community participation, demonstrated leadership potential and financial need.

First preference is given to graduating students from Olean, NY, area high schools which include Olean, Allegany-Limestone, Hinsdale and Portville schools and Archbishop Walsh Academy. Second preference is given to high schools in the following communities – Cattaraugus County: Salamanca, Franklinville, Ellicottville, Cattaraugus-Little Valley, West Valley, Randolph and Gowanda; Allegany County: Alfred-Almond, Belfast, Bolivar-Richburg, Cuba-Rushford, Friendship, Richburg, Scio and Wellsville; McKean County (PA): Otto-Eldred, Bradford, Port Allegany and Smethport; and Potter County (PA): Coudersport, Austin and Galeton. Preference also will be given to a student whose family members are employed by or have retired from Dresser-Rand in Olean, NY.

Named in honor of John J. “Jack” Murphy, Olean native and former CEO and Chairman of Dresser Industries, this scholarship was established initially through a grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas and is continued with donations from generous donors.

Husky logoOHS Class of 1961 Scholarship Fund
This scholarship will be awarded to two graduating seniors or graduates from Olean High School, one female and one male, who have the top GPA in their math and science classes and who will be attending a four-year college/university in any major or field of study. If there is a tie in GPA, class rank will determine the top student(s). No financial need requirement. Established by Duane A. Geuder, Olean High School class of 1961 alumnus, this fund also has been established  in honor of the members of Olean High School Class of 1961 and the fine teachers who provided the class their high school education, in particular Mr. Norm Utecht and Miss Mabel Wilson.

A $1,000 scholarship for a senior graduating from Otto-Eldred High School who has a GPA of at least 2.75 and has been accepted to an accredited 2-year or 4-year school. Preference is given to a student attending a 2-year college, but is also open to those attending a 4-year program. Established by the Otto/Otto-Eldred Alumni Association.

A $500 scholarship for an Olean High senior with preference for a student pursuing an accounting or business degree. Established in Michele’s memory by her parents, David and Irene Krahe.

 

Nicolas G. Pendl Memorial ScholarshipNicolas G Pendl
This scholarship is for a graduating senior from Allegany-Limestone Central School in good academic standing who intends to pursue a 2- or 4-year degree in environmental science or other science-related field. Established in memory of Nicolas Pendl, a 2013 graduate of Allegany-Limestone Central School, by Peter, Mary and Bethany Pendl; the Pendl and Potter families; the Allegany Engine Company; and friends of Nicolas.

Eric PetersEric Peters Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Eric Peters, a former student at Cattaraugus-Little Valley High School who died June 4, 2010, this scholarship will be for a graduating senior from Cattaraugus-Little Valley High School, with a preference for a student who is also a member of the Little Valley United Methodist Church.

Portville College Scholarships
Available to graduating seniors from Portville Central School who have volunteered for the school store or annual Portville College Scholarships phonathon fundraiser. Award amount varies. Established by Portville College Scholarships.

Mark J. Prockton Memorial Scholarship
A $500 scholarship for graduating a senior from Hamburg High School who has lettered in cross country and has the highest GPA. Established in memory of Mark J. Prockton, a former New York City School teacher, Hamburg High School alumnus and runner, by his brothers, Gregg and Mike Prockton.

Ratana RatanawongsaRatana Ratanawongsa Scholarship
Available beginning this October 2014 to students in the Allegany-Limestone School District in grades 7-10 for enrichment programs during the school year or summer programs following completion of grades 7-10. Established in memory of Dr. Ratanawongsa by her family.

Ben & Rose SchwabenbauerBen & Rose Schwabenbauer Educational  Scholarship
Two $1,000 awards for graduating seniors from either Olean High School, Otto-Eldred High School, or Bradford Area High School and one $1,000 award for Portville Central School who will be attending a 4-year college. Preference for a student majoring in elementary education, any education field or criminal justice or law enforcement-related field, who has a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and/or is in top 25 percent of the graduating class, demonstrates financial need and has a record of community volunteerism. Established by Ben and Rose Schwabenbauer, former long-time teachers in the Olean City School District.

Mary-Elizabeth Smith Scholarship
This award is available to a graduating Olean High School senior who is attending college. Financial need will be considered. The award amount varies. Established by the estate of Mary-Elizabeth Smith as part of the Olean City School District Scholarship Fund.

Thomas & Robert Smythe Scholarship
A $2,500 award available to Olean High School graduating seniors pursuing a nursing degree. Awardees must agree to a three-year work commitment to Olean General Hospital upon graduation and may reapply for second year. Established as part of the Olean City School District Scholarship Fund through the estate of Phyllis G. Cridler Family Trust, named in memory of Mrs. Cridler’s sons, Thomas and Robert.

Southern Tier Mil logoSouthern Tier Military Support Group Scholarship
A $500 award available to area military veterans attending Jamestown Community College in Olean. Established by the Southern Tier Military Support Group through the Southern Tier Military Support Group Fund at the Foundation.

 

Gregory D. Spring Perseverance Scholarship
Established in memory of Gregory D. Spring, this scholarship will be for a graduating senior from Allegany-Limestone Central School, Portville Central School, Hinsdale Central School or Olean High School who intends to pursue a degree or certification in a trade or technical program (ex. welding, criminal justice, construction-related fields, etc.). This is a one time award. The number and amount of the awards may vary from year to year.

JTeuscherpictureJonathan Teuscher Scholarship
Awarded to a graduate who has faced challenges while maintaining a positive attitude. For each year of continued education, $625 is given for a total of up to $2,500 over 4 years. One scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from each of the following high schools: Allegany-Limestone, Hinsdale Central, Olean High, Portville Central and Archbishop Walsh Academy. JoAnn WehmeyerJoAnn Wehmeyer English Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship awarded to an Olean High School senior who intends to pursue a four-year degree, has excellent writing skills and has the potential to make a difference. Must include recommendation from English faculty. Established by former students in memory of Mrs.Wehmeyer, who taught English at Olean High School for 42 years.

Kayleigh Wilday Scholar Athlete Award
The Kaleigh Wilday Scholar Athlete Award is given to a deserving Cuba-Rushford senior athlete who is a member of scholar athlete teams during his/her senior year. The recipient is selected by the Cuba-Rushford Athletic Awards Committee. Award amount is $1,000 and is made possible by the Kaleigh Wilday Endowment Fund established by Skip and Greta Wilday in memory of their daughter.

Paul and Mary Lou Wood Swim Scholarship
The fund provides scholarships to members of the men’s and women’s swim teams at St. Bonaventure University, with the award alternating between the men’s team and women’s team. The head men’s swim team coach and head women’s swim coach shall have the discretion in selecting the recipient each year depending on the rotation. CRCF will distribute the award amount to the St. Bonaventure athletic department. The recipient should have and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. The award amount is $10,000 a year, with students eligible to retain the award for four years. The scholarship is given to enhance the scholarship awards available for SBU swimmers. Established by Paul and Mary Lou Wood.

Dr. Donald A. Wormer Family Scholarship
The Dr. Donald A. Wormer Family Scholarship award is awarded to a Portville Central School senior/graduate planning to pursue his/her education at a four-year or two-year college in the medical/health care field. Applicants should demonstrate academic success and financial need. The first award(s) were made for the class of 2016. The number and amount of the awards may vary from year to year, and candidates may reapply. Scholarships will be available in perpetuity through the endowment.
