Area military veterans attending Jamestown Community College in Olean will soon be eligible to receive scholarship aid from the Southern Tier Military Support Group Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Support group members recently established a $500 scholarship within their fund, which was created at CRCF in 2005, to continue its mission of supporting local troops and veterans.

“This fund aids the efforts of the Southern Tier Military Support Group, a collection of military family members and friends dedicated to helping our troops and their families,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit, Executive Director of the Community Foundation.

“It’s only fitting that now the fund contains a scholarship portion as well, supporting our veterans in obtaining a college degree after military life,” Ms. Buchheit added.

Members of the U.S. military who have roots in the Southern Tier area already have benefitted from grants from the fund totaling more than $86,000 for support packages and veteran-based programs.

“Donations are received throughout the year by individuals, local businesses, the Franklinville Ladies Auxiliary, AKT Combatives Academy, and annual events such as the Eade Fitness body building show and Rally in the Valley,” said support group member Pam Caldwell.

“We could not continue our mission to help local military service men and women without the support of our area businesses, groups and individual donors,” she said, adding, “We are always grateful to be part of such a generous community.”

Aside from the new scholarship for veterans, other ways the Southern Tier Military Support Group helps local military members is through regular care package mailings.

“The support group regularly puts together care packages that include snacks, toiletries, magazines and letters of encouragement for our troops stationed overseas,” Ms. Buchheit added. “These care packages mean a lot to their recipients, especially during the holidays.”

Donations to the Southern Tier Military Support Group Fund can be made care of the Community Foundation at 120 North Union St., Olean, or online at
