Five area graduates have received memorial scholarships administered by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Preston Conner received the Deputy Wayne Krieger and Carole Krieger Memorial Scholarship for $500.
The scholarship is available to a Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES criminal justice student from any of the three BOCES locations, pursuing a degree in law enforcement, or to area students intending pursue studies in criminal justice and related fields of study. The fund was established in memory of sheriff’s deputy Wayne Krieger by his family. The name of the scholarship was changed in 2019 to also honor Mr. Krieger’s wife, Carol Krieger, who passed away in January of that year.
Conner will study criminal justice at SUNY Oswego.
Kathryn Hatch received the Elisa B. Hughey Memorial Scholarship for the Arts for $1,000.
The scholarship was established in 2016 by the friends and family of Elisa B. Hughey, a deep lover of the arts and education, after she lost a long battle with cancer. In 2019, the Hughey Scholarship Committee moved the fund under the management of CRCF. This fund provides annual scholarships for graduating seniors of Ellicottville and West Valley Central high schools committed to advancing their skills in any aspect of the fine arts (including sculpture, painting, drawing, watercolor, graphics, animation, architecture/design and photography).
Hatch will attend Houghton University to study violin performance.
Mikayla Miller received the Elodine Swarts Baxter and Lena Conrad Swarts Memorial Scholarship for $1,500.
This scholarship, established in 2016, is for a promising and deserving graduating senior from Hinsdale Central School or a resident of Ischua, NY, regardless of what high school the student attends. The student must demonstrate academic success and involvement in extracurricular activities.
Norman Baxter, a past Hinsdale graduate, established the scholarship fund in memory of his mother, Elodine Swarts Baxter, and his grandmother, Lena Conrad Swarts.
Miller will study sports management at St. John Fisher University.
Grace Tanski, of Hamburg High School, received the Mark J. Prockton Memorial Scholarship for $700.
The Prockton scholarship is for a graduating senior from Hamburg High School who has lettered in cross country and has the highest GPA. Gregg and Mike Prockton established the scholarship in memory of their brother, Mark J. Prockton, a former New York City school teacher, Hamburg High School alumnus and runner.
Tanski will study aquatics and fisheries at SUNY ESF.
Colton Boser received the Patricia McCarthy Memorial Scholarship for $500.
This scholarship is available to Allegany-Limestone Central School and Olean High School graduating seniors accepted to either a 2- or 4-year college, in good academic standing. The preferred candidate demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit and has a strong record of service to others and extracurricular involvement. Michael Wittmeyer and his mother, Dr. Carol Wittmeyer, established the scholarship in memory of Michael’s nanny for 18 years, Patricia McCarthy.
Boser will attend the Universal Technical Institute of Orlando Florida to study motorcycle technology.
