Six local graduates recently received scholarship awards administered by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Mitchel Schnaufer received the Alyn J. Heim Music Scholarship for $2,000.
The Heim scholarship is for a graduating Cattaraugus County student majoring in music. The recipient must demonstrate academic success, as well. Paul DeRitter, Mr. Heim’s former student at Manchester Regional High School in Haledon, NJ, and a musician and music educator himself, established the scholarship to honor his former teacher. Mr. DeRitter taught elementary general music and instrumental music for 33 year in Franklinville.
Schnaufer will attend SUNY Fredonia to study music performance.
Rubinder Chahal received the Anthony and Gayle Iacovino Legacy Scholarship for $225.
This scholarship was originally established in 2015 in memory of Anthony “Tony” Iacovino, a former long-time Olean High School educator and coach, by his sons. In 2018, Mr. Iacovino’s wife, Gayle, an Olean native and graduate of Olean High School, passed away, and the fund was renamed to honor the couple’s shared dedication to supporting students in their educational goals, with a preference for a student who excels in the classroom and also is active in extracurricular activities and community service.
Chahal will study history at Slippery Rock University.
Arreil Keesler received the Betty Pappas Scholarship for $800.
The Betty Pappas Scholarship, established through the estate of Betty Pappas, a former Hinsdale teacher and guidance counselor, is awarded to a student in the graduating class at Hinsdale Central School who will be attending a college or university and has given outstanding service to Hinsdale Central School.
Keesler will attend St. Bonaventure University to study education.
Maddison Hitchcock received the Elias Eade Jr. Scholarship for $500.
The scholarship was created in honor and memory of Elias Eade Jr. by his children. Elias Eade Jr. was a lifetime resident of Olean. Mr. Eade was a graduate of Olean High School and St. Bonaventure University and a member of the Oelan business community for many years. Candidates must be a graduate of Olean High School with good academic standing and leadership skills and plan to continue their education at a trade school or 2- or 4-year college or university. Preference is for a student who was employed during high school and is considering business as an academic path.
Hitchcock also received the Hughey Family Award for Resilience for $1,000.
Established by Ellen Hughey Reynolds, the Hughey Family Award for Resilience will support Olean High School students pursuing post-secondary education (Including 2- and 4-year institutions or vocational schools), with an emphasis on a student who demonstrates resilience.
Hitchcock will study psychology at SUNY Fredonia.
Draven Cummings received the James A. and Joan E. Maguire Family Scholarship for $1,000.
Established by the children of James and Joan Maguire, this scholarship is for a graduating senior from Olean High School, Allegany-Limestone Central School, Belfast Central School or Southern Tier Catholic School who have demonstrated hard work, potential and perseverance. The scholarship will be for students who are not necessarily at the top of their class, but have demonstrated these values. Special consideration will be given to students who have face a learning challenge.
Cummings will study nursing at Jamestown Community College.
Morgan Krotz received the Paul & Mary Janowicz Memorial Scholarship for $500.
The Janowicz’s daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Hanson and the late Paul Hanson, established the Paul and Mary Janowicz Memorial Fund with the Foundation in 2014.
Each year the fund makes possible a scholarship for students at Ellicottville Central School, where Mrs. Janowicz served as a bus driver. The Paul and Mary Janowicz Memorial Scholarship is given to graduating seniors who demonstrated academic excellence and plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college.
Krotz will attend Penn State University to study journalism.
