Five recent Olean High School graduates recently were awarded memorial scholarships named for past area residents via the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.
Caroline Carter received the Louis A. “Louie” and Patricia Magnano Scholarship for $1,000.
This scholarship fund, established through the generosity of Park Centre Development and Louis and Patricia’s daughter, Gloria, supports an annual scholarship for graduating students of Olean High School who are in good academic standing and plan to pursue an education in a business-related field of study at any 2- or 4-year institution.
Carter plans to study marketing at St. Bonaventure University.
David Ruszkowski and Grace Ring received the Tyler Bihler Memorial Scholarship for $1,100 each.
The Tyler Bihler Memorial Scholarship is given to one male and one female Olean High School student who have maintained a grade percentage over 80 and demonstrated good character and citizenship attending a 2- or 4-year college. Tyler Bihler’s family established the scholarship in Tyler’s memory.
Ruszkowski will attend the University at Buffalo to study environmental engineering. Ring will attend SUNY Oneonta to study early childhood education.
Lydia Hammer received the JoAnn Wehmeyer English Scholarship for $2,500.
The JoAnn Wehmeyer English Scholarship, established by a group of Olean High alumni in memory of Mrs. Wehmeyer who taught English at Olean High School for 42 years, is an award for a graduating senior recommended by the Olean English faculty and who has excellent writing skills and the ability to make a difference.
Hammer will attend Rochester Institute of Technology to study English and journalism.
Preston Conner received the Louis L. Marra Scholarship for $1,000.
The Louis L. Marra Scholarship, established in memory of Louis L. Marra, will provide a scholarship award for graduating seniors of Olean High School who have held a job during their high school career and demonstrate financial need and academic success.
Conner plans to study criminal justice at SUNY Oswego.
